This is roving I’ve had forever, from a mill I’ve had a long-standing relationship with, Jehovah Jireh out of Paw Paw Michigan. Strangely, though it’s some of the cheapest “pretty” roving I buy at just under $2 an oz including shipping, I get the most compliments. The roving is pulled, vs. dyed in the hank, which means that the yarn it makes barberpoles unless you strip the individual colors out. Each colorway they produce tends to have three distinct colors in it, some highly contrasting, some all tones in the same family. The roving comes in 8oz bags and when I buy from them I usually get two colors at a time.

I find that, very often, this is the most pleasurable roving I spin. It has an ocassional nupp, but on the whole, it’s very easy to spin either worsted or long draw. The wool tends to be loosely crimpy, and with a few gentle pre-tugs can be spun long draw with ease. The yarn I create with their blends is of medium softness. Softer than Bartlett yarn by far, but we’re obviously not talking Merino, and that’s as it should be. More and more now the mill is putting Alpaca in their blends, and that’s driving the price up considerably.

I’m not sure what this yarn wants to be when it grows up, and I still have over half a bag left so I have time to think about it. Maybe a pair of boot socks, thick and warm? I’ve got enough that I could make them for Steve, if I got ambitious. Or maybe that’s just crazy talk since I just got done hating his sweater. Probably crazy talk, but we’ll see… as women who have kids tell me, maybe I’ll forget how miserable an experience it was and be raring to go again someday soon. I have a hard time believing that, but stranger things have happened.
